As Wicca has only been in existence for 60 or so years, it was hardly “almost wipe out” (sic) by Christians in the past.

The people that the Inquisition tortured were other Christians.

Just take a look at what Christianity did in South America if you want a religion, culture and people that were almost wiped out.

But by whatever you hold sacred, please don’t use false history for *my* religion. Especially if you’re doing a history essay.

First, I would strongly suggest you not use the term Christian Empire as there has never been such an entity. Yes, Europe became Christian, but it was comprised of sovereign nations and kingdoms.

Second, Wicca is a 20th century religion. No one has come close to wiping it out. The suggestion that Wicca is any older comes from 90 year old historical theories discredited 40 years ago.

A wide variety of religions vanished from Europe in the last 2000 years in the wake of Christianity. They don’t have formal names but are instead simply the belief of local cultures i.e. the faith of the Greeks, the faith of the Romans, the faith of the Celts, etc.

However, torture and genocide were generally not major tools. Tortune is more associated with the Inquisition, which rooted out heresy, not pagan religion. Genocide is the systematic obliteration of a large group of people. The Romans were not obliterated, for example. They converted. This was done through a variety of means: missionary work, legislation, social pressure, the fact that Christianity was appealing to many during this time due to yet more influences, etc.

I think the most interesting ‘wipe outs’ were the other sects of Christianity… Gnosticism et al.

Most pagan religions were eraticated, but Christians like most other religions have prostelitized to so many areas that they have wiped out many of the ideas of more than one god, more than just a particular religion. Africa has a large Christian population and most of the tribal people were multi-diety followers and were shown the way to worship one god instead of many. Torture and execution was reserved for those who didn’t go so easily. The pagens were generally easy because there was no real organization of the religion they just did there thing and left people alone, but the Muslims and Jews were a real threat because they had some organization and text, they didn’t go so easily because it is difficult to break family bonds and end traditions.
