I have to write an essay about religion in popular culture and I’m stuck on my essay topic.

Some examples include, baseball fanatics, Trekkies, Superman fanatics, breakdancing culture, basically anything people “religiously” do.

Anyone have any good ideas?

   Religion is an important topic in politics today. You might discuss the various candidates that have run or are running in the current campaign and their approach to religion.
   For instance, Huckabee was a mininster. And generally the Repubs wear their religion on their sleeves whereas the Dems don’t much talk about religion unless the subject is forced up them.
   Obama is particularly interesting because of his attendance at a church run by Reverend Wright.

   The hypocrisy of religion.

   Sunday Christians, the condemnation of other religions, etc.

   So much hypocrisy, so little to support their arguments.

   How about the way people are becoming more religiously eco-conscious. Simple recycling has spun into using less plastics, cancelling newspapers, buying environmentally friendly household products, using organic body care products and buying organic food.

   Politicians are hyper-concerned with reducing emissions, while average consumers are now even said to be struggling with eco-phobias and the added stress of having to worry about harming the environment.

   It’s a big topic that touches everyone everywhere in a variety of ways. For instance, you feel pretty good about yourself when you buy organic bananas and compost the peels, but later when you go to put on some lipstick you feel a pang of fear because you read somewhere about all the carcinogens going into your makup and you don’t want to apply cancer-on-a-stick straight onto your lips.

   CNN did a special last night on how just one animal affects it’s whole environment in nature, and Oprah is doing yet another show today on eco-friendly products, so it’s an easy topic and one that’s quite relevant too.
