HegelianObjectivity asked:
Brushing aside the idea of absolute truths, what religion’s beliefs/tenets do you think are most harmonious ‘with humans inherent nature, and which one makes the most sense.
I got it – religions try to fit human’s qualities, instead of people striving to meet objective tenets of religion – bottom-up instead of top-down. But with that in mind, what religion characterizes human’s naturalness the best, what is most in alignment with our natural selves?

Agnosticism.
That is to say: The existence of god or gods is intrinsically unknowable.
I don’t find any part of a human’s inherent nature that doesn’t have a more naturalistic explanation, I think religions and their gods are based on and formed from human nature not the other way around.
To me, moral codes based on philosophy and rationality make the most sense. I really like Humanist philosophies for the most part.
Actually it is not just one the three of them Islam, Christianity and Jewish.
They all do, though people’s interpretations don’t.
Christianity is by far the closest to the truth and makes the most sense because it is not harmonious with human nature. Christianity requires faith based on things not seen. It is a spiritual process that appeals to the soul of man.
The inherent nature of man is do what feels good at the moment, to believe only those things he can see and accept only what makes sense to his intellect. Most religions around the world appeal to man’s nature.
The American Indian beliefs. The fact that they do not make their beliefs public, and in order to be trusted with any of it, you must PROVE you are worthy, tells ME it has to be real.
Several other “ancient” religions have very good parts of them, but as a whole, there is not one I know of that I can say has any truth to it. Man wrote the words, man makes mistakes, man has a very creative imagination, man manipulates to control, and the written words offer no proof that what they relate is true.
The one you can believe in.
This may surprise you but no religion at all. I have to speak on this briefly because I would need all day to tell you but if you research not religions but the information behind the bible you will find that we were given free will to do what ever we want to. religion is what messes everything up because God wants a personal relationship with you and only you. Churches start small and God is big and then as the Church gets larger you will see that God looses his seat and gets pushed to the back of the church and then eventually booted out of the building, God destroyed the earth once by water then he sent his son here with his spirit in him to try to show us first hand how he wants us to be and we nailed him to a cross. God gave us the word and its up to us to willingly read it and build our relationship with Christ. Bless you…
I might have to avoid giving you a religion that “comes closest to the truth”, but it seems humans need something, anything to believe in in order to fulfill the need to be a human. that’s what makes us human: the capacity to have faith, to believe in providences and authorities higher than what we think we are. everyone and anyone can argue/discuss/ et al the finer points of what particular faith/belief system/denomination ad nauseum( agreeing with one another on a belief is not necessary for that belief to be true), but the fact we do and MUST believe in something, even if it’s not believing in anything, is simple and simply who and what we are.
Carl Sagan once said that with respect to cosmology and physics, Hinduism is the closest. I’m not certain anymore, but if I recall correctly, Sagan was referring to the fact that Hinduism posits that the universe is on the order of billions of years old (the only main stream religion to be so close), and actually suggested that the universe exists in infinite cycles of death and rebirth, just like some modern physicists believe in a cyclical or ekpyrotic universe.
However, creation story aside, I personally think Buddhism is closest.
to answer your question…one would have to go back in time about 25,000 to 35,000 years….to see how it all began…as I like to think how any religion got started,…..{a Neanderthal came out of it’s cave a looked around ….he/she knottiest the trees, grass, the ground, felt the air blowing, the water that they used, and realized that there was a force that was bigger than they were, for all that they could see and touched was there for the taking…..so at that moment “paganism was born ….the worshiped many Gods…God of the wind, rain, the food they ate, God of the water they drank, the God of the ground that the plants came from ….and you can’t say the Christianity has any play in the fabric of things…it don’t……Christianity did not come in to play until the 1100′s, when the pope came up with the idea of {1} religion….Christanity….hundreds of thousands of people were kill if they did not convert…….even today, Christians go out into the streets and go door to door preaching and try to convert people, as well with the other religions……..
The second best question after why, how do i know what is right. Some wait for a sign, some ask who they think might know, some see and follow what most do, some follow what most don’t. Or in this case what is most correct (not right). But belief is strange inherent nature, not believing is also believing in that sense. If there is no absoulte it cannot be the belief of absolute which i belive to be GOD. The way if you ask is ‘Peace’ find it that is the aswer, that is way what else is ‘Peace’.
In general, I would say there is no such thing as an absolute “truth”, because each person has their own personal interpretations to something and they may think their truth is the “absolute truth”.
In my opinion, there is no absolute truth because we never “prove” anything 100%. “Prove” is a very interesting word because how do we actually “prove” something is true? This all comes down again to what you think is “proof”.
I would say for you the religion that comes closest to the truth is the one you can “prove” comes closest to the “truth”. “Truth” is defined however you make it to be.
In my case I’m an agnostic deist. I’m agnostic because I don’t know whether there is a god or not, but I choose to believe in a god, and that is the god of deism. Deism is a religion that states god created the universe and left it on its own. In other words, the deist god is not the active god of the Abrahamic religions. You can pray to the deist god all you like, but for the most part he/she/it probably won’t help you. It seems the most logical to me. It’s not very comforting spiritually but it seems to make sense.
I think the additional comments of this question got it wrong. Defining qualities of man is not the “truth” of religion.
Religions are a collection of mythical symbolisms that serve as a portal to the universal mind (the transcendent spirit, if you will). Even the word “God’ is only a symbol that is merely a portal to “truth.” It is helpful to think of each religion as a different circuit, made of a unique alloy, each tapping into its own segment of the transcendent. So, each religion reveals some truth.
I believe that Christianity is the best circuit, made of the finest material, revealing the best part of the transcendent because the teachings of Christ tap into pure love through the high-grade alloy of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). I’ve seen no other religion that comes close.
There may, one day, be a religion of truth. The human race has first to shake the chains of slavery and the burden of greed and lose the delusion that God comes from a book. The religion of truth is nowhere to be seen yet. We are not yet sufficiently evolved. We probably will never have such a religion. Blind faith in unprovable truths is hard to dispel. It is not in your heart or your mind, it is in your soul, and we no longer have the ability to communicate with our soul. We are unthinking, we do as we are told and little else. Free thought is suppressed, by chemicals and sounds (fluoride and ELF waves) as those with power continue to destroy freedom in all its forms.
Catholic, Christian Catholic Religion.
Some form of Pantheism, perhaps, such as William Blake’s conception of Christianity. Either that or some kind of Pagan natural religion.
Religion is the opposite of it….they all miss the mark by infinite
Religion is a theory not a truth. With millions to choose from some have a Jesus, some do not, some are waiting, ppl need religion because they are frightened. They need some meaning to life or they will drown in the abyss. God is a convenient patsy when life turns shi**y. It is easier to say ‘this is Gods will’ than to admit you were irresponsible and f**ked up. Ppl do not want to be accountable for their misery. God makes it easier to be apathetic and do nothing. Religion provides a justification for mankind being so completely irresponsible and creating a world that is slowly dying. Why should I admit I was a bad person when I can blame it on God.
