“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ….false accusers,….fierce, despisers of them that are good,….traitors, ,….lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God,…….ever learning but never able to come to the knowledge of Truth”.( II Tim. 3:1-7)

That sign you mention is figurative language, referring to a “Day of the Lord.” There were many in the old testament, that describe God’s judgment on a nation this way.

Since most people interpret these types of apocalyptic references literally, there is much confusion, and many are still looking for the stars to literally fall from heaven and the moon to not give its light. This has always meant rulers falling from power when God’s judgment came upon them. In Jerusalem from 66-70AD during the catastrophic Roman Jewish War, the Jewish historian Josephus tells us that the signs God gave to the early Christians happened during that time.

So the 2nd Coming is a past event, if you believe the Bible is inspired. The time statements are all too clear that Jesus returned during Judgment on Jerusalem, to abolish the old covenant with its temple and rituals, and usher in the new covenant, which we live in today. His return was never a “cosmic” event, but a “covenantal” event.
