jesus religion
Crystal (PSM)

I often hear people say that the Jews killed Jesus. The Jews and even other people deny it and say that the Romans killed Jesus. What religion were the Romans?

PS: I am more or less an atheist, but I am curious.
I double up as a Christian sometimes, but I am an atheist most of the time. I am not reading any books or anything.

I don’t think you can call them a religion. They mostly believed in God – they were just deceived. They did not believe that Jesus was the son of God.

Paganism was what ninety-something percent of the people in the that area were doing. Jews were a visible minority.

Since Jesus never existed, it’s an invalid question.

If he had, the Romans had a polytheistic belief system at the time.

They believed in Pagan Gods, They were polytheists and the first person who answered this is un-educated and totally wrong

The Romans worshipped a bunch of gods at that time. Different places put different emphasis on some gods, but Zeus was the big guy. Also, I think it’s important for you to remember that Jesus WAS Jewish. Not just sorta Jewish, but totally Jewish. If you read closely into what Jesus says in the Bible (not what Paul says!), he advocates sticking to the old laws (Torah) even more closely.

Pagan. They were famous for assimilating absorbing the culture of those they conquered, buildings, dress, eats, religion, you name it.

They worshiped a pantheon of Gods. They may have heard about Christ, but to them, he was just another crazy Jew. It would be years before the majority of Romans accepted the belief in the omipotent, omnipresent God, taught by the Greek philosophers. I’m not sure if the majority ever believed in the God of the Jews, as the Jews believed in him, even though they accepted many other parts of Christianity.

The Romans believed in other types of god’s. They had many god’s, most of them were statues and stuff. It was the jews who wanted to nail Him to that cross, but the Roman governor gave the ok. Although the Roman governor did not agree, but majority rules, and the jews was the majority at that incident.

They were what we’d call “pagan.” They worshiped according to the Roman state religion. They believed in the Roman pantheon, and in the “Genius” of the Emperor, who was seen as a divine being incarnate.

By the way, the most likely historical scenario is that Jesus was an upstart Jewish prophet who was executed by the Romans for sedition, i.e. muck-raking. It was a volatile situation in those days, and the Romans were extremely wary of any potential disturbance of the “peace.” Crucifixion was, of course, a distinctly Roman punishment of criminals. Had the Jewish Sanhedrin wanted Jesus dead, they could’ve ordered him stoned without ever bothering the Romans. The blame for Jesus’ death was probably placed upon the Jews because the Gospels were pitched to a primarily Roman audience.

the roman ceaser at the time was jewish, and by his ceaser law at the time everyone under his rule had to follow the religion of the ceaser. its the same way christinaity became exeptable

Well supposedly they’re both responsible. the jews demanded his death, and did the trial, but theromans did the actual executing. The romans at the time were I believe some form of pagan.

The Romans followed paganism or pantheism, they worshipped the Greco-Roman gods, jupiter, saturn, all gods of ancient Greek and Roman Mythology. There was also a cult of the emperor, all (I’m not sure about the “all” part) Roman citizens must worship the emperor as a diety. Majority of Romans did this but many religions like the Egyptian one and various other cults were also worshipped by them.

Jesus was never a historical human being I **** to tell you… he’s no more real than Zeus, or prometheus or Horus, Hesus… He’s the current Myth.

Also if you read the bible you’ll find that Jesus isn’t the man, he’s the manna… the mushroom.

They were secular humanists. They worshipped Caesar and the leaders of Rome. They depended on their own devices (idol gods for example) and on the respect of persons around them for their livelihood and survival.

The Romans were pagans and worshiped Caesar as a God. And of course they had many other gods to worship also.

The Romans could have been anything. Apparently, different religions were all over the place but I think the majority had adopted the Greek’s pantheon.

  19. non sequitur on January 25th, 2009 1:27 am

Romans were pagans. They had nothing against Jesus. They killed Jesus at the instigation of the Jews since the Jews considered blasphemy to be punishable by death. That is what they accused Jesus of.

  20. Jed on January 26th, 2009 11:10 am

Polytheistic. They had a god for all kinds of different things. Among Roman soldiers, there were particular cults that were popular.

    They were Jehovah’s Witnesses.

  22. HP Temporary Memphis Belle on January 29th, 2009 5:36 pm

They were polytheist who followed the gods such as Jupiter, Venus, Juno, etc.

The Romans did not kill Jesus. He offered up His life willingly as a ransom for many.
