Going by that standard, any one who has ever commited a violent act makes their entire religion a “violent one”.

Christianity is a peaceful religion because Christ preached a message of peace. However, there are many Christians who fail to live up to this ideal. That fact does not change the fact, that Christ’s teachings were very peaceful. Turn the other cheek, forgive, let he who is without sin… and all that.

If they were using their religion as an excuse for committing violence against civilians, and the excuse was based on actual teachings of Christianity, then yes, people would have a very good reason to blame it on the religion of Christianity.

Anyone who associates themselves with such a religion should be prepared to be treated with distrust right along with the people who followed those violent teachings.

When a religion’s Holy Book condones and encourages violence and war (especially against civilians), then people who are not of that religion have every right to view that religion as a violent religion.

If the teachings of that religion do not condone violence against innocents, then there is no reason to blame the religion. In fact, I’m pretty sure that Christianity encourages people to “turn the other cheek” and “love their enemies.” I am also unaware of any New Testament teachings that encourage violence against civilians or whole groups of people. If you know of any, please post them.

I don’t know enough about Islam to judge, but if their Holy writings encourage violence against civilians or whole groups of people, then that would be a good reason to distrust anyone who chooses to be a member of that religion. It’s only common sense.

Yes indeed. It’s the case of the pots calling the kettles black. The so-called Christian soldiers coming all the way from the US attacked Iraq, killed thousands of innocent civilians and children, destroyed all major infrastructures in Iraq, for reasons only best known to George W. Bush, who himself is supposed to be a devout Christian himself. Why I might add? I wonder how Christians at large (if they do have any conscience at all) feel about this!

It is like anything, it’s easier to say rather than do. Look at the history of Christianity, the Inquisition, the crusades, etc….. Is that what Jesus said? To gather arms and use violence? No, on the contrary. All he says as far as using armor to defend is against satan, a war against our souls.

Anyone who thinks what’s going on in Iraq is about religion is a little touched in the head. One side in the conflict may utilize the lack of education and a nationalism of a sort in a religious sense to obtain power and control–but the whole thing is a simple power struggle. Totalitarian regimes often use religion to gain secular power. One must, as a country, decide whether to do something about it or not. While people may infer that America is a big bad bully–we simply were in a situtation where we had a country who was violating the terms of the cease fire from the first war they had with the rest of the world, were rearming in direct contravention of this cease fire–demonstrated no desire whatsoever to work with the rest of the world. The world made a mistake in the 30′s with a similiar man in germany and the world paid a heavy price. However one likes or dislikes George Bush and Tony Blair–they basically made the choice that they preferred to learn from history and not repeat it’s mistakes. Agian–none of this was particularly about religion–it was about the clash of power.
