It gives them common ground. Very few people restrict their social groups to just their own religion though, but this could just be the fairly open-minded area I live in. Some people judge others on their religion because they a. believe they are following the wrong religion and need to be 'saved' or b. consider negative stereotypes of a religion to be true, whether they are valid or not.
