A Treatise on Divine Contentment by Simeon Ashe
|
|
Simeon Ashe (d. 1662) was an English nonconformist minister of the Gospel and a member of the Westminster Assembly. Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) said of him that Ashe was, "a man of great sincerity, humility, benevolence, prudence, and patience: as eminently diligent in preaching the glorious gospel of the grace of God in season and out of season." When he died, it was said that the church had lost a choice pillar and that the city of London had lost an ancient, faithful minister. Ashe wrote this work, Divine Contentment, to demonstrate the Christian's duty in being submissive to God's providences. This is every Christian's holy and gracious duty in this life, and the manner of a Christian is found chiefly in his disposition of being in a holy frame of contentment. Ashe says in opposition to contentment, that "discontentment is to the soul, as a disease to the body. It puts it out of temper, and hinders its regular and sublime motions heaven-ward constantly." The divines who recommend this work said that it is "one of the best works of the kind ever written." Ashe is biblical, penetrating, practical, simple, and spreads the richness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the entire work. He expounds this treatise from the classic verse in Phil. 4:11, "I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content." Not a scan or facsimile. |

A tribute to my Sister and a vision of Jesus... Back in 1987, my sister Jeanne decided to spend her final weeks at her home in Providence, RI. I became her caretaker along with Hospice nurses and volunteers. Jeanne had battled Hodgkins disease for 5 years and the treatments took their effect on her body and organs. I noticed a transformation in my sister. She was only 31 and yet she had the wisdom of someone who had lived a full and long life. She became pure love. She was selfless. She was more concerned with the comfort of those attending to her than she was with her own comfort. Jeanne fought death for six weeks because of her love and concern for her 12-year old son, Michael. She was called home on April 11, 1987. The first night back in my own bed, I was awakened and when I opened my eyes, I saw a face on my wall. It appeared to be lit up from within and it scared me. I closed my eyes and opened them again and remember thinking: "is this my sister?" and then I understood it was Jesus. His eyes looked like fire. Right after that, I experienced difficulty eating and spent much time reading my bible and praying. I was being shown all my sins and felt the full impact of them. This is when I repented and felt like I was being cleansed and purged of all past sins. Not long after this, I received the baptisim in the spirit, but not the full-water baptisim.
